Project Overview
Clarks Construction was appointed to complete a specialist decking replacement project at Unicorn Primary School. The works focused on upgrading the existing footbridge decking to improve safety, durability, and accessibility while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure.
The project required careful handling of live services, structural protection, and reinstatement of surrounding materials to ensure the bridge remained safe, compliant, and visually consistent with the school environment.
Project Scope
Clarks Construction carried out a full programme of works including:
- Composite decking replacement to the school footbridge
- Cutting back and removal of surrounding foliage, weeds, shrubs, bushes and branches to enable access
- Careful stripping, de-nailing and disposal of two layers of existing timber decking
- Exposure, inspection and preparation of the existing timber substructure
- Removal of imperfections and preparation of the surface to receive the new decking
- Temporary removal, safe storage and reinstatement of mild steel mesh panel inserts between timber posts
- Protection of live water and electrical services during works
- Temporary enabling works to services and full reinstatement upon completion where required
- Making good to surrounding hardstanding concrete slabs and tarmac at bridge abutments
- Final clearance of all trip hazards and obstructions
- Leaving all hardstanding areas as existing, clean and safe
Challenges & Solutions
Working near live services: The bridge was located adjacent to live electrical and water services. Our team implemented strict control measures and temporary protection to maintain safety and prevent service disruption.
Maintaining structural integrity: The existing timber structure was carefully exposed, inspected and prepared to ensure it remained structurally sound before the new decking was installed.
Minimising disruption to the school: The works were carefully planned and scheduled to minimise disruption and maintain safe access routes.
Project Outcome
The project successfully delivered a safe, durable and visually improved footbridge. The new composite decking provides improved slip resistance, longevity, and a modern finish while preserving the original structure.
Key outcomes included:
- Increased safety for pupils and staff
- Improved durability and reduced maintenance requirements
- Fully reinstated surrounding areas
- A clean, hazard-free finish
